NLSIU vs NALSAR: The Two Best NLUs

If your CLAT rank places you in the top 120, you are likely choosing between NLSIU Bangalore and NALSAR Hyderabad. Both are exceptional. The right choice depends on your career goals, not on arbitrary rankings.

Academic Comparison

NLSIU: 5-year BA LLB programme. Known for a structured curriculum with strong corporate law and constitutional law courses. Faculty includes former judges and senior advocates. Research output is the highest among NLUs.

NALSAR: 5-year BA LLB programme. Known for intellectual rigour and a culture of independent thinking. Smaller batch size (90 vs NLSIU's 120) creates closer faculty-student relationships. Strong in public international law and criminal law.

Placements

NLSIU: Median package ₹18–22 LPA. Top recruiters: Trilegal, AZB, Cyril Amarchand, S&R Associates, Khaitan. 95%+ placement rate. Strongest in corporate law firm placements.

NALSAR: Median package ₹16–20 LPA. Top recruiters: AZB, Trilegal, Luthra & Luthra, DSK Legal. 90%+ placement rate. Increasingly competitive with NLSIU in corporate placements, with additional strength in policy and academia roles.

Campus Life

NLSIU: Nagarbhavi, Bangalore. Urban campus with access to Bangalore's legal ecosystem (High Court, law firms, tech companies with legal teams). Campus is being redeveloped — new buildings expected by 2027.

NALSAR: Shamirpet, Hyderabad. 60 acres, residential campus outside the city. Beautiful campus but relatively isolated. Strong internal community because of the residential setting.

Cutoff Comparison (CLAT 2026)

NLSIU General: AIR 1–60. NALSAR General: AIR 50–120. There is an overlap in the AIR 50–60 range where students must choose. SC/ST/OBC cutoffs follow proportional patterns.

The Decision Framework

Choose NLSIU if: you want the strongest corporate law placement track record, you prefer an urban campus, or you are targeting legal academia (NLSIU's brand carries the most weight for faculty positions).

Choose NALSAR if: you value a smaller, close-knit academic community, you are interested in public law or criminal law, or you prefer a residential campus experience.

Both are excellent. Neither is a wrong choice. Choose based on what matters to you, not based on rankings that change by 1–2 positions every year.
