NIRF #1 Law University

NLSIU Bangalore

National Law School of India University, Nagarbhavi, Bangalore, Karnataka. India's first NLU and the benchmark against which every other law university in the country is measured.

Overview

The National Law School of India University (NLSIU) was founded in 1986 by Justice M.N. Venkatachaliah, who later became the Chief Justice of India. It was the first National Law University in the country, and its establishment fundamentally changed the trajectory of legal education in India. Before NLSIU, law was largely a three-year postgraduate course pursued as a fallback. NLSIU introduced the five-year integrated BA LLB model, making law a serious undergraduate career choice.

NLSIU has held the NIRF #1 ranking among law universities consistently. The university is located in Nagarbhavi, a residential area in western Bangalore. While the 23-acre campus is smaller than some of the newer NLUs, the Bangalore location offers unmatched access to the Karnataka High Court, one of India's busiest high courts, and to the growing number of law firm offices in the city.

The university is known for its academic rigour, mandatory moot court participation, and an alumni network that is, by any measure, the most influential in Indian legal practice. NLSIU alumni occupy senior positions at every major law firm in the country, in the judiciary, in government, and in international organisations. The BA LLB programme admits approximately 180 students per year across all categories through CLAT.

Admission to NLSIU is through the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT), conducted by the Consortium of NLUs. There is no separate entrance exam. Your CLAT All India Rank determines whether you receive an NLSIU seat during the centralised counselling process.

Fee Structure

The total annual fee at NLSIU Bangalore is approximately ₹2,50,000, covering tuition, hostel accommodation, mess charges, library and IT fees, and examination fees. Over the full five-year BA LLB programme, this totals roughly ₹12.5 lakh — a figure that is competitive by the standards of top professional programmes in India.

NLSIU offers merit-based scholarships to top performers within the programme and need-based financial assistance for students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds. Several external scholarship schemes (government and private) are also available, and the university actively assists students in applying for these.

Given the placement outcomes — median packages of ₹15–18 LPA — the return on investment at NLSIU is among the highest of any undergraduate programme in India, law or otherwise. Most students recover their total five-year investment within the first year of employment.

Placements

NLSIU Bangalore has arguably the strongest placement record of any law school in India. The top recruiters include India's most prestigious law firms: AZB & Partners, Trilegal, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas, Khaitan & Co, S&R Associates, Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas, and JSA. International firms and organisations also recruit from NLSIU, though international placements remain a smaller segment.

The median placement package is approximately ₹15–18 LPA, with top offers exceeding ₹25 LPA. It is worth noting that a significant proportion of NLSIU graduates — perhaps 25–30% — choose not to sit for campus placements at all, opting instead for litigation (joining a senior advocate's chamber), judicial services preparation, policy roles in government, or further studies abroad (LLM at institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard, and Yale).

The NLSIU alumni network is its most powerful placement asset. Alumni in senior positions at law firms, in the judiciary, and in government actively mentor and recruit from their alma mater. This network effect compounds over time and is a significant reason why NLSIU has maintained its position at the top despite the emergence of newer, well-funded NLUs.

Campus Life

NLSIU's 23-acre campus in Nagarbhavi houses all academic buildings, hostels, the moot court hall, a well-stocked law library, sports grounds, and a canteen. Hostel accommodation is mandatory for all students. The campus is self-contained, but its Bangalore location means students have easy access to the city — courts, law firm offices, cultural events, and more are a short commute away.

Student societies are an integral part of the NLSIU experience. The moot court committee, debate society, legal aid clinic, law review, and various cultural and sports committees are active throughout the year. Moot court participation is mandatory in the initial years, and NLSIU teams have an outstanding record in national and international moot court competitions, including the Jessup, Vis, and ICC moot courts.

The residential model fosters close-knit batch relationships. Five years of living and studying together creates strong peer bonds and a collaborative learning environment. This is a feature of NLU life generally, but at NLSIU, the relatively compact campus and the intensity of the academic programme make it particularly pronounced.
